Using the internet in this modern era is pretty much a necessity for large companies and institutions that require a high level of work effectiveness in a day-to-day schedule. To achieve such standard, many companies are turning to cloud computing, seen as a vital IT infrastructure for such institutions. Cloud computing is a particular computer system that consists of cloud storage and computing power without requiring active management by the users. Because of this capability, different computers within an organization would still function even after work hours, a feature that is highly sought by everyone.

Because each company and institutions have different needs and interests, they can either use the public server and private server versions of cloud computing. When taking a short glance at the definitions of public server and private server, both are different from one another. In this context, the public server is open to the public and you can access the server anywhere regardless of your current location. On the other hand, private server demands you to access the server through a specialized point of entry to prevent unauthorized users from making unlawful entries. 

From here, we have a basic knowledge about the difference between public server and private server. The difference consists of: 

  • Accessibility 

Continuing from the previous overview about the difference between public server and private server, multiple parties can access the public server at the same time due to its open nature. On the contrary, private server can only support one enterprise at a time to ensure privacy and security. 

  • Reliability 

Both public server and private server have different kinds of reliability during usage. The public server is commonly leased because of its scalability, which means that it can be used for a range of different uses. At the same time, private server’s scalability is more limited, but more reliable because of the focused management of the server. 

  • Subscription fee 

The subscription fee difference between public server and private server is quite evident. Public server requires a cheaper subscription fee since it is a standard server from many vendors. On the other hand, private server is commonly costlier because it consists of specialized purposes and functions. 

  • Security level 

Public cloud and private cloud both demand the same level of security as they rely on the customers’ trust to operate them for daily tasks. Because of this reason, their difference only revolves around the data privacy of their respective companies. In this regard, private server is more appealing for companies that insist on a high-security level of their network infrastructure. 

  • Network monitoring 

Relating to the previous security section, network monitoring in the cloud computing system depends on who monitors the whole network. The vendors monitor the public network along with the clients, though with a lesser amount of involvement when compared to private server. On the other hand, network monitoring is done more rigidly to ensure a high level of network monitoring in its corresponding server.

  • Performance 

Although both public server and private server requires a similar level of performance for the sake of effectiveness, there is a slight difference between both kinds of server. In this context, public server’s performance depends on the vendors’ management, since the vendors are also responsible for the performance of multiple servers. On the other hand, private server is usually more reliable in its performance since all of the platform’s resources are focused for that particular server instead of being shared publicly. 

From what we have read before, there are several notable differences between the characteristics of public server and private server. These differences range from the accessibility to the reliability of each server. Despite these differences, it depends on the users on how will they use and maintain their respective network infrastructure to its fullest potential. In the end, both public server and private server should prioritize all of their functions regardless of their difference.
