What is Database Management?

What is Database Management?

Data is a very important thing for a company. A group of organized and interconnected data is called a database. To make sure it is easy to be checked and used, a company’s database must be neat, complete, and systematic.

As such, the way to make, control, and access database practically and efficiently are through the Data Base Management System (DBMS). This is one of the components within a database system.

Database Management System Features

Within a DBMS, there are several features:

Security

Data must be secured from other parties. Leaked data can inflict losses to a company. Internal or external causes yield the same amount of risk. However, DBMS will ensure the data’s security optimally.

Independence

DBMS’ strength as a system is its independence because the data does not depend on the accessors’ program. The reason for that independence is that the management system’s structure is based on information needs and not based on the application program.

Integrity

Integrity feature within a DBMS makes it possible for a user to manage the data and its relatives, where the user can ensure the data’s validity and consistency.

Data Sharing

A company is commonly consists of many elements. By using DBMS, data can be accessed simultaneously by its users.

Recovery

Recovery feature exists within a DBMS to recover error data, damaged from either hardware problems or software problems.

System Catalog

System catalog or data dictionary within a DBMS makes it easier to describe the data field within a database.

Productivity Device

There is a device in a DBMS that can increase the users’ productivity when using the database, such as through making reports or searching for information.

Types of DBMS

There are several types of management system for companies, such as:

MySQL

MySQL is a multithread and multiuser software that has been installed for 6 million times around the world. MySQL AB, a Swedish company, owns this software.

MySQL’s strength over other apps is that it is free for download, stable, flexible, and possesses a good security system. However, this app does not entirely support Visual Basic, Foxpro, or Delphi programming language connection.

Oracle

Oracle has been operating from as far as 1977. Oracle is a relational database management system that manages information openly in an integrated manner.

This system is capable of operating in a client environment, supporting data access simultaneously, supporting high transaction performance, and many others. The strength of this program is its feature of multiple servers and data storage. However, the system is rather expensive and complex in its operational process.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is a software to perform database manipulation on a massive scale. Its strength over others is its ease of use, which makes it popular for database administrators. Moreover, it also has a reliable data security mechanism. However, this system can only be used in Microsoft Windows platforms.

Firebird

Firebird is also an open-source DBMS. One of its abilities is the capability of using a standard syntax to create foreign keys. This application is also capable of replicating data from third parties.

Apart from the aforementioned examples, other DBMS examples that are commonly used in a company’s database management are Access, DB2, Ingress, Informix, and others. Before making your decision, make sure that you have considered the strengths and weaknesses of each DBMS.
