Prepare the Migration to Cloud in Efficient & Effective Way

IT asset migration such as an operational system or network infrastructure to cloud is not an easy decision to be made by the management, there are a lot of factors that can affect the success rate of a migration process that is fatal to your company. Therefore, AdIns held a webinar with the theme “Seamless Migration To Cloud“, Prepare the Migration to Cloud in Efficient & Effective Way. This webinar aims to provide information and discuss the migration to cloud services. From how to migrate, what to prepare, costs management, privacy & security, and what needs to be considered, including advantages & disadvantages.

This webinar was held on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 14:00 – 15:30 WIB via Zoom Online Meeting. Mr. Ali Naga Saputra as IT & Cloud Solution Expert from PT. Adicipta Innovation Technology was present at this event as a speaker delivering some information about Cloud Migration and AdIns products, one of which is aCloud, a cloud service provided by AdIns include Cloud Advisor, Cloud Builder, and Cloud Manager services.

Next, Mr. Alexander Lukman, Territory Account Manager from AWS (Amazon Web Services), delivered the presentation in this session. He introduced cloud services from AWS and what they offer and discussed with participants regarding their problems related to cloud migration, especially those who work in the IT field. Some of these topics include:

  • Differences of on cloud and on premise
  • Cloud migration preparation
  • Cloud Technology Risk Mitigation
  • Cloud Cost Management

Cloud vs On Premise

Between Cloud and On-Premise, there are some primary differences in several factors. If you feel confused about which one to choose, it all comes back to what needs and solutions you are looking for and the right services for your company. Here are the primary differences to consider.

  1. Deployment

On Premise: deployment on this service lasts from several weeks to several months. Cloud: whereas on cloud service, it only takes a few minutes.

Cloud: whereas on cloud service, it only takes a few minutes.

  1. Cost

On-Premise: in this service, you pay the capital expense in advance. Companies that provide on-premise services are responsible for server costs, power consumption, and space.

Cloud: on the contrary, you pay monthly operational expenses as needed. In other words, companies that choose the cloud only have to pay for the resources they use. Prices will go up and down depending on the usage.

  1. Technology

On-Premise: Technology purchased now is used for the next 3 to 5 years.

Cloud: In this service, we continue to upgrade the Compute and innovate for customer needs.

  1. Infrastructure Management

On-Premise: the IT team maintains the physical server. Companies have full rights to their data and have complete control over what happens, be it good or bad.

Cloud: while in this service, it is managed by the cloud service company.

  1. Scalability and Flexibility

On-Premise: this service has limited scalability and flexibility.

Cloud: contrary to that, it can be customized (manual/ auto-scaling) according to customer needs.

Cloud Migration Preparation

To migrate to the cloud can’t be done arbitrarily, and of course, several things need to be prepared. First, the company can evaluate and choose what sector they want to migrate to the cloud. So, the company can conduct an assessment to discover what this sector needs in the migration process. This assessment can start from technology readiness, network, infrastructure, costs, and security. Then the company can research the cloud service provider that best suits these needs. Afterward, you can determine the right and most suitable cloud migration strategy for your company. Of course, before that, you need to discuss this matter with the cloud service provider you choose.

Cloud Technology Risk Mitigation

Risk mitigation needs to be implemented and developed for the security and protection of data and applications. It is the responsibility of management, even if the data and systems are hosted and managed by the cloud service provider. The following are the risks encountered frequently in the application of cloud technology.

  • Lack of Knowledge, e.g. cost management, understanding services.
  • Security and Privacy, e.g. architecture design
  • Compliance Risk, e.g. data residency
  • Cloud Migration and Incompatibility, e.g. outdated app / DB
  • Improper Access Control, e.g. using root account for operational activities
  • External factors, e.g. ISP

Cloud technology risks that arise can vary according to the conditions and preparations of the company. Some things that need to be done are to perform a risk assessment process regularly and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies.

Cloud Cost Management

Several things can affect the amount of migration and operational fees. Generally, the cost of cloud migration and cloud rental prices depend on the migration strategy and needs, such as technical architectural planning, the number of data to be migrated, migration operational activities, and so on.

The following is a flow for determining the costs required to migrate to the cloud.

  1. Identify

Looking at your current on-premise sizing, TCO modelling and understanding your IT migration objectives and strategies.

  1. Deep dive

Next is to map all resources such as CPU, memory, storage, OS, and so on.

  1. Right sizing

Preparing your estimation while highlighting potential savings areas and possible cost saving alternatives using Reserved Instance.

  1. Validate

Using a calculation app or software for example, AWS Calculator to visualize and validate cost estimates.

  1. Operationalize

After migration, it is possible to explore ways to further optimize costs through Architectural Review and Economies of Scale.
